Mrs. Kerin Retires
The following is from a booklet we prepared in school for Mrs. Kerin's retirement.
Today we come together to celebrate the teaching career of Eileen Kerin and give thanks for her huge contribution to this school and this community for over thirty-four years.
Eileen commenced her teaching career in this school on July 1st, 1975, joining Mrs. Teena Guinan in what was then a two-teacher school with 39 pupils on roll. Prior to this, she had spent two years teaching in St. Rynagh’s N.S., Banagher and one year as Remedial Teacher in Birr.
Over the course of her career, huge changes took place, with Lumcloon N.S. growing and developing. Eileen was appointed Principal in 1997 and weathered developments as varied as the introduction of the Revised Primary School Curriculum, the comings and goings of various cigirí scoile, First Holy Communions, Bord na Scol football matches, concerts, strikes and even floods.
Under her stewardship, the school was completely refurbished and a significant building project completed. Eileen was involved in all stages of this project, from planning to completion and this fine building is testament to her energy and drive in promoting this school.
On her last day in this school, November 30th, 2009, she had spent over thirty four years in Lumcloon N.S. Seventy five pupils were enrolled in the school and the era of boiling the kettle for break in Paddy’s house across the road were well and truly past!
As we gather here today to celebrate Eileen’s teaching career, we ask God’s blessing on this new phase of her life and wish her health and happiness as she embarks on this new path in life.
