Building for the Future 2003

In 2003 we decided to participate in the Irish Independent/Sunday Independent Building for the Future Project whic was sponsored by CIE.

The theme for the project was Caring for Others. Classes from third to sixth workd on the project and investigated the different ways in which we can care for others, from dressing the children in theInfant classes to protecting the environment for the generations to come.

As 2003 was the year Ireland hosted the Special Olympics we also looked at the games and what they mean to those who participate and are involved in any way.

The project was very interesting and all the children enjoyed working on it and were very proud of the finished product.

As the County Offaly winners representatives from Irish Independent/Sunday Independent and CIE came to our school and presented us with our prize. We had a great day decorating the school and we had a party afterwards.

Building for the Future

Fruit and Bread Day

After the success of our Cereal Day, we decided to hold a Bread Day first and then a Fruit Day along the same lines as the first day.

We decided to hold them on Friday mornings.

A lot of our mothers and grannies baked their own special type of brown bread or soda bread or scones for the Bread Day. They were brilliant. They even sent the bread in sliced up with butter as well.

Fruit and BreadWe discovered that every home-made bread tasted different. We couldn't choose which was the best; they were all brilliant!

We had wholemeal bread, pitta bread, tortillas, and lots more too. Of course we had plain loaf bread as well. Some mothers sent in currant bread to us. It was really delicious.

The Fruit Day was the same except we all brought in a variety of fruits.

We had oranges, kiwis, blood oranges, lots of types of apples, pineapple, grapefruit, mango, plums, peaches, mandarins, pears, melon and even something we eventually figured out was a Passion Fruit. More of us are bringing fruit to school in our lunchboxes now and we have cut back on bars etc. Our school has a policy now that we bring healthy snacks from Monday to Thursday and then on Friday we break out! We are allowed bring bars, sweets and biscuits in our lunchboxes on Friday, which is a real treat.

Caring for the Infants in School

Helping the InfantsWe look out for the infants by making sure that they don't go out on the road. We tie their laces and open their drinks at break-time. We sort out little rows or arguments that we see. We bring the infants in to the office if they fall.

We make the new infants feel good and happy in our school when they start. We help them when they are stuck with their work if the teacher is out. At break time when we are not allowed out because the weather is bad we mind them in their classroom.

We make sure that they play together on the yard and do not leave anyone out. We tell them that they have to play games according to the rules. We make sure they don't climb up on the walls. We tell them that we'll get a teacher to get the ball if it goes out on the road. We make sure that they don't go out after it.If they feel sick, we bring them into Annette, the Secretary, in the Office.

We tie their laces for them and help them to close their coats when they are going out to play.

Our Olympic Flame

One-day teacher gave us a big sheet of card.

We cut out a shape like the Olympic flame.

Then we coloured flags and stuck them on the Olympic flame.

We got little flags off the Internet and then looked in an atlas for the colours of the flags and coloured all the flags.

We stuck the flags onto the Olympic flame, we picked flags that were the same size and then stuck them on.

Teacher printed miniature pictures of the sports that will be involved in the Special Olympics, teacher gave them to Paul and he cut them out and stuck them on the flame of the Olympic flame.

Finished FlameWhen we finished the front of the flag we will paint the back of the Olympic flame Michael painted the back of the Olympic flame.

The entire classroom helped to colour the flags that we stuck on the Olympic flame.

We put masking tape around the middle to separate the flame from the handle.

We are all writing stores and working on the Special Olympics.

We got a Pritt Stick and stuck them on.

The first flag stuck on was the American flag and the last flag stuck on was Pakistan .

Ashley coloured the Ireland flag.
